Certified Medical Assistant - Cancer Center

Certified Medical Assistant

AM Duties

  • Organizes the front office, patient waiting area, and coffee kiosks for the day
  • Turns on the CT Scanner and perform tube warm-up and fast calibration
  • Sets up patient dressing rooms appropriately
  • Orders supplies from McKesson
  • Prepares medical scrubs for laundry pickup
  • Adds and updates data in the EMR system and faxes referrals
  • Maintains the Rectal Catheters stock and orders more when needed
  • Steadfast awareness of when a patient check-ins. Upon patient arrival, greets and gets the patient in a room right away
  • Helps cover if another MA is off
  • Covers the Front Desk
    • Checks in patients
    • Updates patient Demographic
    • Provides positive and compassionate customer service to patients and staff
    • Schedules consultation, appointments, and follow up appointments
    • Answer phones and handle the calls
    • Distribute interoffice mail and incoming mail

PM Duties

  • Cleans changing rooms and empty linen bags
  • Stocks fresh linens in dressing rooms and vault areas, as needed
  • Completes front office, waiting area, and coffee kiosk closing procedures
  • Cleans the catheter tray drape so that it is ready for the following morning
  • Bags the biohazard linens

Treatment Vault Responsibilities

  • Assists therapists with patients in the treatment vault. Will insert the rectal catheter using gloves and fill the balloon. Position patient if needed. Remove the rectal catheter & help clean the treatment room and set up for the following patient.
  • Ensures that patients are changed and ready to go in a room. If there is more than one patient in the lobby, escort them back separately to a changing room
  • Takes patients vitals; make packets according to RN specifications.
  • Restocks the changing rooms and prepares them for the next patient
  • Periodically check the restrooms and make sure they are presentable
  • Replaces MLC motors on treatment machines as needed
  • Monitors patients throughout treatment for unusual reactions and events, and report this info to the Therapist, Chief Therapist, nurse & MD
  • Maintains current knowledge of therapeutic procedures performed in Center
  • Will close the facility at the end of the after the last patient leaves. Ensures all areas are well stocked for the following treatment day (i.e., linen in each vault and CT, 5 cups in the drawer, 5 KY tubes, and 5 syringes)
  • Keeps the workstation clean, neat & free of clutter

  • Recognizes patients’ emotional needs and respond to them appropriately
  • Interacts & cooperates with all personnel of the department courteously and professionally while maintaining a professional level of conduct
  • Communicates all problems and concerns regarding activities in the department to the appropriate personnel
  • Observes and respect the confidentiality of information regarding patients, doctors, and fellow employees
  • Dresses according to the departmental dress code (i.e., scrubs with nametag)
  • Complies with specific department guidelines and policies
  • Empathizes with patients in need of care
  • Skilled at multi-tasking in a high-volume environment
  • Enjoys working in a team-oriented environment with a positive attitude

Requirements

  • Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (Successful completion of CMA (AMAA) Exam)
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as a Medical Assistant
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited college or technical school
  • High School diploma or GED
